Ways to make money as a kid!

If you have children you have probably thought about different ways kids can make money. After having both my baby boys I knew that I wanted to teach them the importance of how to handle and make money properly.

When I grew up I didn’t learn about the importance of money because debt was seen as normal in my household. It was normal for me to see my family living paycheck to paycheck and to see them use debt to pay off other debt.

By the time I finished college with my graduate degree, I not only had student loan debt but I also had a pile of credit card debt.

Because of that, I knew that I wanted to teach my children early on about the importance of money.

Why It’s Important to Teach Children about Money

I recently heard a quote by Robert Kiyosaki that said, “If you want your children to have an unfair advantage in life, teach them financial education. Show them the real rules of money and taxes.”

When I heard that quote it stood out to me because it’s amazing how teaching a child about financial literacy can put them years ahead even when they are little. Teaching your children about money at a young age can help them gain an understanding of what it takes to make money and it also helps them gain clarity on how to manage money properly.

Set Up A Goal

One of the first things you can do before your child starts a mini job or a side hustle is to teach them about the importance of goal setting to help them accomplish their goals. Some questions to ask your children are:

  • Why do you want a mini job or side hustle?
  • Do you want to save for a certain item? How much will the item cost you?
  • How much money do you want to earn each month?

These are all the questions that I would totally ask a child or teenager that wants to earn money.  There are a lot of different ways that a child can earn money and this post will share 12 ways how kids can make money this year.

12 Ways To Make Money As A Kid This Year

1. Sell Baked Sweets

If your child is great at baking and designing cupcakes, cakes and other sweet foods they can totally start a baking business. Once they start the business they can sell the baked goods to friends of the family and to the public.

I know a young teenager who makes custom cookies and custom cupcakes and has started a business named “Jacie. Bakes”. She currently makes extra money every month from making customs cupcakes and cakes.

Her business is doing amazingly well and she is currently booked for the next 2 months. So if your child is great at baking maybe starting a custom baking business will be great for them.

2. Watch Videos on Swagbucks

Swagbucks is one of my favorite sites to make extra money every single month. On this site, you have to be at least 13 years old to complete different tasks such as watching videos or playing games.

When you complete the different tasks on swagbucks you can earn points and turn in your points to earn gift cards to places such as Target, Walmart, Amazon and much more. Swagbucks is free and super easy to earn extra points every single day. Check out Swagbucks here to get started today.

3. Become a Movie Extra

A cool way to make money as a kid is by being on camera as a television or movie extra.  A few years ago I spent many months being an extra on television shows such as Empire, Chicago PD and many more.

While I was on set, I would often see children and babies being apart of the scene as well. So, if your little one enjoys being around people and being in front of people on camera totally look into them being an extra or even a principal actor in a movie or television show. Some roles might even turn into recurring roles which means they will be able to make money every week for a certain amount of months.

Note: You will never have to pay to be an extra in a movie or to audition for a movie or television show. If a casting company tells you to have to pay a large sum of money to audition it is probably a scam. Most if not all auditions are free. There are some membership sites that require monthly payments to see audition listings but they will never ask for an upfront cost to send you to an audition.

4. Do Voiceover Acting

Another awesome way to jump into the acting field as a child is by doing voiceover acting. I currently have a friend named Aja who has been managing her girls’ voiceover acting careers since they were little kids.

They currently make over $50 per hour doing different voiceover work throughout the months. So, if your children are great at doing different voices and wouldn’t mind getting behind a mic to record different voices look into voice over acting for them. It’s a great way to jump into the acting business and also a great way to make money doing what they are great at.

5. Create A Lemonade Stand

Furthermore, another cool way for kids to make money is by creating a lemonade stand in their own town. A lot of successful business owners talk about some of their first businesses being lemonade stands so this side hustle has been around for years.

In most towns, you will need a vendor’s permit to start which can be found in your city’s township or district office. At the district office, you can also get information about the laws and regulations for your town to start a lemonade stand.  This side hustle helps a lot of kids earn money every single month.

6. Review Toys On Youtube

Another cool way to make money as a kid is by starting a Youtube channel and reviewing toys. Since I have a toddler at home I have seen my fair share of children youtube channels. One child Youtube Influencer that stands out to me is Ryan’s Toy Review who made a whooping’ 22 million dollars last year reviewing toys.  One of the main ways Ryan and family made money through Youtube last year was through advertisements which is apart of the Youtube Partner Program.

The Youtube Partner Program lets influencers earn money through their Youtube videos put placing ads on the videos. To get accepted into the program you have to have over 4,000 youtube video views over the past 12 months on your channel. Click here to see Youtube’s Partner program policies.

7. Babysit

An awesome way for kids to make money is through babysitting. Moreover, when I was growing up, a lot of my friends would babysit local mom’s babies and toddlers to make extra money.

If your child or teenager is looking for a way to make extra money and is of age to care for smaller children totally look into babysitting jobs. You can find babysitting jobs in your town online in places such as Care. This site shares a list of babysitting jobs that you find in your local area.

8. Sell Crafts

Another way to make fast money as a kid is by selling crafts on places such as Etsy. If your child is great at making designs such as jewelry, cups, mugs and other items they can sell them to the public on Etsy. If a child is under 18 they must have a parent manage their Etsy account until they become of age. Check out Etsy by clicking here.

9. Do Lawn Work

Completing lawn work is a job that many kids do to make extra money on a daily basis. This job has been around for years and even my mom did local outside work to earn extra money.

Some lawn work that children can do would be,  watering the grass & garden, picking up sticks in the lawn, helping with planting a new plant, and bagging leaves. You can put up your child’s services on Facebook or other social media platforms to let family and friends know they are in business.

10. Pet Sit & Walk Dogs

If your teen love pet sitting and walking dogs this might be an easy way to make extra money each month for them. To get started you can go to a website named Care and select the Pet care option.

Finally, you will see a list of people in your town looking for pet care for their dogs. Teaming up with your child to see which jobs to select is key and will help you know which jobs they are accepting.

11. Put Services on Fiverr

A great way to make money as a kid is by putting services on Fiverr. If your child is 13 or older they can put their services on the Fiverr website and make money. Fiverr is a freelance website that lets individuals sell their services to others around the world.

Some of the services that they can offer on Fiverr are graphic design, voice-over work, music production work and much more. To get started simply go to Fiverr and register for an account.
